    WHAT PEOPLE LOVE

Long ago Mt Washington was a summer resort area for monied Angelenos. The men came to hunt quail and the women relaxed at the Mt. Washington Hotel, located at the top of San Rafael Ave. A few of the rustic turn of the century hunting cabins still exist and the hotel is now a Self Realization Center. The homes here have qualities and views that rival many options in high ed real estate in more famous Los Angeles locations.

In the 60’s Mt Washington was a haven for creatives and liberals. Rumor has it that there was once a commune. But then rumor also has it that there was once a nudists colony, so who really knows?

People love the diversity of people- Mt. Washington is popular with Downtown Professionals, University professors and entertainment people looking to escape the lime light.

The convenient location is also a major draw. Downtown Los Angeles, Old Town Pasadena, Glendale and the Valley are all convenient to Mt. Washington.

    What People Don’t Love

Mt. Washington is a residential community – there are no businesses. You need to descend to one of the Parks for shopping, eating or entertainment.

    HOUSING

This colorful history is part of the wonderful tapestry that is modern day Mt. Washington. At the top of the mountain, near the old hotel, there are gracious Craftsman and Period Revival homes at the top of the mountain and many very interesting 1970’s contemporary homes were built just below.

    Mt Washington Craftsman Home

Each side of the mountain has it’s own personality. The side facing Highland Park is the oldest. There are some significant Craftsman homes and a few of those rustic hunting cabins lucked up into the folds of the hill.

The side facing Eagle Rock and Glassell Park holds homes built in the late 1930’s and 1940’s.

Mt. Washington West EntryCypress Park holds Mt. Washington West – the development built by Ray Watts in the 1960’s. This is my home neighborhood, so I have a few extra words about this bit of Mt. Washington. If you look at “official” maps we were park of the old “Cypress Park”

boundaries, but residents consider themselves part of Mt. Washington. Classic Mt. Washington residents might have thrown shade at us because we are a housing development –  a few models repeated over and over.

Mt. Washington West is special because the streets are wide and easy to navigate and park, the homes are uniform and the residents all belong to Mt. Washington Elementary school- accessed by the coolest shortcut at the top of Marchena Dr. Pro Tip: Marchena Dr. is a wicked skateboarding street, but only the bravest kids will dare to try.

    SCHOOLS

Mt Washington Elementary is considered one of the premier elementary schools in the LAUSD. It is located at the top of the mountain on San Rafael Ave. On the other hand, I am biased as I am an alumni!

Los Angeles Unified School District is one of the largest school districts in the country. Check the schools attached to your home of choice with the Resident School Finder Tool.
