Character Homes are the antidote to today’s cookie cutter homes. If you love a home with soul and character, you’ll love North Cumberland Heights and DIGGS is the real estate company for you.
North Cumberland Heights is in Northwest Glendale (otherwise known as the Brand Park Area), well above Glenoaks Blvd. It is a triangular area bordered by Cumberland Road, W. Mountain Ave and Grandview Blvd.
The North Cumberland Heights Historic District consists of 179 single-family homes in a neighborhood with especially deep historical associations. A large portion of the area was developed by the Campbell brothers, Dan and Arthur, associates of Leslie Brand who were instrumental in the establishment of Glendale’s beautiful neighborhoods at the base of the Verdugo Mountains. The proposed district contains many fine examples of the Period Revival architectural styles of the 1920s and 30s, along with Minimal Traditional and Ranch style homes from the 1940s and 50s. In October 2010, the Historic Preservation Commission considered a nomination filed by area residents to establish a historic district and voted unanimously to allow the designation process to begin, finding that the neighborhood appears to meet several of the City’s criteria for designation.
WHAT PEOPLE LOVE ABOUT NORTH CUMBERLAND HEIGHTS
There is a genteel grace surrounding the homes in this special neighborhood. It seems like the place where Mary Poppins might have accompanied the Banks children as they walked home from school.
The avenues are wide and lined with trees and the lots are a bit larger than the neighborhoods to the south – there is a bit of breathing room and privacy while still presenting a cohesive neighborhood.
Entertainment Industry people really love living here. The area is every bit as gracious and interesting as it’s counterparts in Hankock Park or Los Feliz but at a fraction of the cost. Life is convenient to the Valley and Weside studios and entertainment business centers.
FAVORITE LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Brand Park Library, Doctor’s House and Japanese Friendship Garden – These three attractions are true gems in our city. The Brand Library was restored to historic perfection and the Doctor’s house holds holiday tours and special events.
Kenneth Village – This charming commerce area packs a big punch in its two block area. There is an organic Mexican resturant, a pizzaria and the new hot place to see and be seen, The Commissary – a coffee house and interesting eats place.
Hiking the Verdugos – Unparralled views of the entire valley are available along thre hiking trails above Brand Park. At the top these trails meet up with the fireroad system giving access to hiking and mountain biking from Burbank to La Canada.
SCHOOLS FOR NORTH CUMBERLAND HEIGHTS
Kepple Elementary School – Kepple is a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School, a language immersion program for Korean and GATE programs. Homes located within 1/2 mile radius of Kepple get preferential treatment, but entry is by a lottery system.
