Top Destinations For Glendale CA Homeowners

Our friends are moving. They are leaving their cramped and dated two bedroom townhouse and moving to a 10 year old home with 3600 square foot of living space, and a third of an acre of blissful, peaceful, land. The previous owner even threw in the riding lawnmower. The kicker? They are saving so much money by moving they can both retire and go fishing. Literally.

We are stinking jealous.

Where did my Glendale CA friends want to move? South Carolina.

Prices are soaring in Glendale CA. The average sales price for a single-family home is up nearly 15% and the number of homes sold above one million dollars rose 68%*

Prices are so high people are starting their research on Glendale CA alternatives. If you WERE to live somewhere else, where would it be?

Realtor.com recently published an article on popular destinations for Californians.

Stay in California

Here are the top California counties drawing residents from other parts of the state. On average, they offer properties that are 17% more affordable than where relocaters are coming from.

Top in-state destinations for California residents

  1. Riverside County
  2. San Bernardino County
  3. Los Angeles County
  4. Orange County
  5. Sacramento County
  6. San Diego County
  7. Placer County
  8. Contra Costa County
  9. El Dorado County
  10. Ventura County

There is a new bill on this coming November’s ballot that will make this a very popular list- it will allow California homeowners 55 years and older the chance to transfer their current property tax bill anywhere in the state of California. Currently, Propositions 60 and 90 only allow that right if you purchase a replacement home in participating counties. (Click the link to see currently participating counties).

Find another state

Again, according to the article from Realtor.com,

According to our analysis, 52% of California residents looking outside their county are looking outside the state—although not too far.

“If you’re in Southern California, you’re more likely to be looking out of the state in Nevada and Arizona,” Vivas says. “It’s more affordable and offers more new construction.”

Plus, those places are still relatively close to friends and family in California, and have similarly dry and sunny weather. The main draw, of course, is home prices that are on average 43% cheaper.

Top out-of-state destinations for California residents

  1. Maricopa County, AZ (Phoenix)
  2. Clark County, NV (Las Vegas)
  3. Yavapai County, AZ (Prescott)
  4. Ada County, ID (Boise)
  5. Washoe County, NV (Reno)
  6. Mohave County, AZ (Lake Havasu)
  7. Pima County, AZ
  8. Kootenai County, ID (Coeur d’Alene)
  9. Travis County, TX (Austin)
  10. Hawaii County, HI (Big Island)

I noticed our friend’s destination (South Carolina) was not on that list, but the United States is enormous! I discovered all sorts of places as I interviewed agents in interesting places on my DIGGS Live show. Want to check out Boise? Watch this one- I chat with my girlfriend/kick-ass Realtor Andrea Pettitt and she had me half convinced to get on the plane that day and explore her diggs!
